I have a big love-hate relationship with cliche advice. The older I get the more truth I find behind them. But by the time I see they are true, I wish I had known the lesson they held a long time beforehand. Like, why do I have to go through some really painful or annoying experiences only to figure out that Old Uncle Earl was actually not kidding!? So here are three of the most well known and unloved cliches out there, and what they actually mean. Hopefully, you will be spared the long time it took me to figure them out!
So here are the Grand Prize Winners for most evasively painful cliches, and the more meaningful wisdom they encompass.
1) “You Know When You Know”
This is actually code for “You will have an inexplicable peace surrounding your decision and anyone that tries to tell you it won’t work will not phase you”.
This is usually associated with settling down with someone, but can easily be applied to decisions about changing jobs, moving to a new place, deciding to make a big life change. ‘You know’ is meant to be the feeling of making an unshakable resolution and, despite the initial shock of the change, a feeling of ‘this is the right thing’ pervades.
While there are some times when we may question the decision leading up to the point of no return, it is more of a precautionary questioning to check for any extra to-do list items. Also, in making the decision, the idea of an alternative arrangement or solutions lose their luster and appeal, even if they are more extravagant or elegant.
2) “Follow Your Dreams And The Money Will Come”
My initial reaction is ‘Great, I’ll start reading books on the couch for the rest of my life and the mailman can drop off the checks.”
Um. Not quite. It’s more like this: If you have a passion and you want to do it, share it, make it, have it, there is a chance that other people somewhere in the world want to do it, share it, make it, have it too. If you are willing to figure out a way to have your passion and make it profitable, where there is a will, there is a way.
This is especially true when it comes to college major or career choices. If you don’t already LIKE what you are doing on the good days, why in the world are you still doing it? Consequently, having the peace of mind that comes with having a job that you feel fulfilled in is going to make your life expectancy higher and quality of life so much more meaningful. Trust me, you want your life to be much more peaceful if you can manage it!
3)”You’ll Find Someone When You Stop Looking”
Code Break: Be so busy pursuing a more mature and meaningful you that you will attract the people that will love and admire you best for your achievement and personal growth.
Oh my gosh, I really hated this one for the longest time because it seemed like paradox created to make fun of me and every other single, hard working person on the planet! By and by, I’ve been getting busier with life outside work and bringing my passions and interests to the forefront of my life, and letting the work day be more of my means to a livelihood rather than my entire life. In the process, I’ve started making friends, revisiting old acquaintances and friendships, and finding my weekends already booked by the pursuit of what excites me above and beyond my day job.
Some say the universe will be more likely to help you out when you are engaging in it, and it’s somehow entirely true. Here is where you invite the universe to find you opportunities when you are already in its face being out and about town. On this note, don’t let this phrase’s wisdom be restricted to just finding a person to settle down with, this can be finding a new boss, job, place to rent, college, car, church, grocery store for goodness sake.
The truth of the matter is that taking into account the element of peace (or lack thereof) that is involved in your decisions is not to be laughed at, and the more attuned you are to the peace you have in your decisions, the better you will be at making them! (mike drop)
So the next time you get one of these lovely, ambiguous pieces of advice, remember that people wouldn’t say it if weren’t tried and tested true and that looking deeper into the phrases offered, your small nuggets of wisdom are more apparent than you may have originally thought.
See you out there!
